Osteoporosis is characterized by weak, brittle and porous bones.  Hip and spine fractures are common among those with osteoporosis, causing disability and pain.    Most commonly seen in women and those over 50, men and younger people can also develop this disease. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), one in two women over 50 will develop an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.

Fortunately, you can reduce your risk by:

spacer
  • Early diagnosis
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Not smoking
  • Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking
  • Adequate calcium and Vitamin D
  • Prescription medications
